According to the United States Government, international treaties and various organizations, including but not limited to the Business Software Alliance (BSA), software piracy is stealing.  Under U.S. copyright laws, U.S. code Title 17 and 18, theft or piracy of software is a civil and criminal offense. If a copyright owner brings a civil action against you, the penalties for infringement in the U.S. may be up to $150,000 per each program copied. The U.S. government can also criminally prosecute you for copyright infringement and if convicted, you could be fined up to $250,000, or sentenced to jail for up to five years, or both.
